If you didn’t know last Saturday was “Batman Day”. This year because it’s the 25th anniversary of the character “Harley Quinn” took over “Batman Day”. She was subbed in for other characters in famous and iconic “Batman” covers and generally given at least equal billing to “Batman”… It’s kinda messed up. She should have a big thing on the anniversary of then the first episode of “Batman: The Animated Series” with her in it, but she shouldn’t horn in on “Batman” day.

She already an over-used and not particularly well used character character as it is. The comics I see with her in it suck. The “Suicide Squad” movie sucked, and I haven’t seen it but the direct to DVD movie “Batman And Harley Quinn” is generally seen as sucking. Speaking of sucking someone rented “Wonder Woman” so I saw it a 3rd time… Yeah still C+ at best.

Have you ever seen someone about to do something dumb and something told you to try and stop them? Your instinct is to just mind your own business and move on, but something makes you fight it. For me that thought is almost always a mistake. One thing I’ve seem to have learned is that people are going to what they’re going to do. You can tell them exactly why what they’re doing is dumb and exactly what they should instead and 90% of the time they don’t listen. Worse yet sometimes they get mad at you for. That’s kinda what I tried to convey with Freedom Female in this comic.

One thing this comic gets into is that not too long ago “Batman” met the alternate reality version of his dad. He was from the “Flashpoint” world (which shouldn’t exist because it’s an alternate timeline that was erased not another universe but…comics). In the “Flashpoint” world “Bruce Wayne’s” dad becomes “Batman” after “Bruce” is killed by criminals. His mom also becomes “The Joker”. People generally seem to like this idea, but I find it completely ridiculous.

I think it’s even worse that “Batman” and “Dad Batman” actually met. The whole point of “Batman” is that he represent a child’s reaction to losing his parents. It’s a kid saying “no one will ever die again” and meaning it. This is also why it’s so important that “Batman” doesn’t kill.

An adult wouldn’t have the same reaction, and even his they did they wouldn’t EXACTLY the same thing. “Batman” used his childhood fear of bats as weapon. Why would his dad do the same thing? What I’m getting at is he would at least have a different gimmick. Maybe rabid squirrels or something?

Before I tried to take a change pace and talk about some comics that are actually good. Let me add on more to the “slightly above okay” pile. That would be “Red Hood And The Outlaws”. This one deserves a special distinction for being “most improved comic”. Back when “DC” did the whole “New 52” thing “Red Hood And The Outlaws” was not just terrible it was a prime example of everything wrong with the “New 52” and comics in general. I was painful character destroying experience that “DC” is still trying to recover from.

In fact here’s what I wrote about “Red Hood In The Outlaws” on Facebook when it came out..

“Red Hood And The Outlaws:  Ya know I must really not understand how comics work.  Cuz’ I thought a writer pitches a concept for a book then someone has to approve it, and then after that an editor has to approve the story.  Obviously from reading this the process must go more like this…

DC Staff:  Hey anyone wanna write?!  We got 52 spots open!  And we’ll take ANYTHING!

*name removed to protect the writer*: How about 1 character no one likes, another no one cares about, and I’ll completely ruin a character who’s part of popular kids show?

DC Staff:  Great!  Here are sacks of money!

I’m not even going to get into the main problem and controversy of this issue yet.  Lets start with the “star” of this comic.  See… Well… I mean… How bad does a character have to suck for people to vote to have him killed?  They didn’t vote for Jason Todd to not be Robin, or to not be around, or for there not to be another Robin besides Dick Grayson.  They voted for him to die… That says an awful lot.  So course the marketing geniuses  at DC go “hey people hate this guy lets bring him back, and make him more unlikeable!” .  I guess Marvel brought back Bucky and made him kick ass so DC decided to do the opposite.  So that’s our lead for this comic… Then there’s Green Arrow’s sidekick who now goes by Arsenal who at best is meh (also seeing as Green Arrow is now much younger was Arsenal his sidekick in this new continuity?). And then there’s Starfire… Who has been turned into a emotionless sex robot who will let basically anyone bang her and doesn’t care about or remember humans.  Yeah great way to welcome those kids who watched the “Teen Titans” cartoon.  The sad part is the art is pretty good, and the first few pages actually seemed half decent then Starfire shows up and this becomes more creepy and pandering than hentai.  Hell it’s worse than bad hentai.  I don’t have a problem with fan service, cheesecake, or whatever, but this isn’t even insulting to women… It’s insulting to guys.  You really think guys want this?!  Really?! Also the rest of the issue is boring.  I came to see a train wreck and this is so much worse than thought it would be”

This new version though ain’t bad. Not great, but not bad. Once thing I admire is learning and improvement so salute on turning it around.

I think the comic speaks for itself so I’m gonna talk some comics since it’s been a while… So “Secret Empire”… That was big stupid waste of time… Could they at least have semi-consistent art? In fact you know what not even going to talk about it anymore. (It sucked… Okay seriously done now) I’m going to try and be positive and list some above average comics I recommend…

“DC”

  • “All Star Batman” – One of the best books out now
  • “Teen Titans” – Solid book
  • The non-Bryan Hitch “Justice League” (not “Justice League Of America” with “Batman” and B-team people) – Decent
  • “Wonder Woman” – This is teetering on falling off the list, but it’s just good enough for now

“Marvel”

  • “Infamous Iron Man” – I think this is THE best book out now. I thought Dr. Doom trying to be good was bad idea. So glad I was wrong
  • “Champions” – Not big on any of the individual characters, but this is a pretty good book
  • “Astonishing X-men” – This just start so it might take a bad turn, but good art on story so far

So I was saying yesterday that because I parody “Marvel” and “DC” characters sometimes I combine similar characters. Here are some examples you might’ve seen if you’ve been following these comics:

  • “Aquaman” & “Namor” = The Underwater Monarch
  • “Atom” & “Ant-Man” = Insect Dude
  • And now Pussy Whip is both “Catwoman” and “Black Cat” (as Slick Kitty)

“DC” and “Marvel” often do their versions of each other’s characters as “commentary” on them. Sometimes these characters become radically different over time and the “copy” becomes more popular than the original.

Completely unrelated to the comic I had jury duty last week. I’m allowed to talk about the case, but I won’t. I’ll just say it was NOT pretty.

Because in these comics I mix versions of “Marvel” and “DC” characters I like to combine characters that are similar or serve the same purpose. I’ll get more into that tomorrow though.

Looks like there’s a delay in Admiral Star joining The American World Protector Of America. This comic is referencing how “Batman” proposed to “Catwoman” not too long ago in the comics. I love making fun of how crazy and hypocritical their relationship is.

Maybe then being together could lead to some interesting stories. It seems it could lead some problems too. If they don’t pull the trigger and have them get married it would be really weak. If they do get married though I can’t see it lasting. Then you gotta have a divorce or something which seems to age them. Then you gotta have yet another reboot.

Yep, we’re still on this Taylor Swift stuff. Even if she’s the supervillain some people make her out to be she’s better than, Kanye and the Kardashians. If Bey n’ Jay are the rulers of music/celebrity they rule from above. Their decrees are heard every once in a while from on high. Down here with us Kanye and Kim Kardashian. A narcissist nut only second to Trump and his emotionless nothing of a wife.

Taylor at least has a sense of humor about herself. For all the talk of the “shots” taken in her song and video “Look What You Made Me Do” in the end she makes fun of every version of herself. Even the supervillain.

The main topic of this comic is Taylor Swift putting out on her album on the 10th anniversary the death of Kanye West’s mom. This was a whole thing on Facebook towards the end of last week.

Was it on purpose? I doubt it, but more importantly, I don’t care. If Kanye and Kim Kardashians are the heroes they I gotta lean towards the villain. I don’t watch a lot of videos anymore but Taylor Swift has “Bad Blood” which is the best video I’ve seen since that came out. She also has the commercial where she falls off the treadmill.
