YOU CAN’T MAKE AN OKAY MOVIE

ALONE: “JUSTICE LEAGUE” REVIEW

I’ll just go to the end first on this. It’s a B. A B with an asterisk. See when I went to see “Wonder Woman” the reviews were REALLY good. Suspiciously good, but I figured the movie had to be at least pretty good. It wasn’t and isn’t and it made me pretty mad. If I’m going to see a mediocre movie I don’t want to expect something good and be disappointed. For “Justice League” even with it bad reviews I wanted to make sure this didn’t happen again. So I made sure I went in expecting absolutely nothing. I watched some “Batman V Superman” to set my expectations as low as possible beforehand and then I went to see “Justice League”.

Throughout the movie I had to stop myself from thinking about how easily it could’ve been MUCH better and had not think about “The Avengers” at all. “Justice League” isn’t particularly great in any way, but at least it wasn’t boring, dull, and colorless like the other “DCEU” films. Though he looks stupid and is nothing like any version of “The Flash” he was far less annoying than I thought he was gonna be. He was actually okay. “Superman” was actually in it more than I thought he would be. I literally thought he wasn’t going to show up until the very end. The scenes that were obviously written by Joss Whedon really help to turn this group of heroes into an actual team. The side characters don’t hog up too time (although Martha Kent didn’t need to be in it and Lois could’ve been in it far less). The villain is weak, but I expected him to be weaker.

That’s the nice part…. Problem is, this is the goddamn “Justice League”. This should’ve been mind-blowingly great. I mean this should’ve been “The Avengers” on steroids. This is potentially a much more powerful team. These are the OG’s man! Well, besides the “Justice Society”, but still. This is what we have though and this is the best the “DCEU” has to offer.

For some quick comparisons

  • “GotG Vol. 2 – WAY better than “Justice League”. Still comic book movie of the year
  • “Thor: Ragnarok” – Better that “Justice League”
  • “Spider-man: Homecoming” – About even. “Justice League” has more action, but “Spider-man” has a better villain, is overall written better, and has “Iron Man”
  • “Wonder Woman” is worse. WAY more boring. WAY more “Writing 101” problems

Tomorrow, we finally meet The Underwater Monarch in these comics. He’s joined by Freedom Female and Frag Count as they discuss a possible “Rotten Tomatos” conspiracy.

And that wrap up this week of making fun of “TMZ”. Moving on, this week’s episode of “The Flash” was particularly terrible. “Barry” teaching anyone to be a hero is pretty hilarious after the opening credits thing for “The Flash” points out he created the villains this season YET AGAIN! There’s a really ham-fisted lesson about protecting people and stuff. Also we meet a bunch a terrible annoying versions of “Wells”. Oh and we see the main villain of this season is… A guy in a wheelchair… Just like in season one. Congrats “Flash” you back to the bottom of “CW” “DCComics” show.

Also after some type of embargo or something the early reviews of “Justice League” are out… It’s not pretty. Mixed at best, and even the good reviews aren’t very good. CBR.com has an article with snippets of a bunch of them and that’s what read. You can check it out here https://www.cbr.com/justice-league-movie-review-roundup/ . I no hope it would be anything beyond okay, but we’ll see. I’ll see it Saturday and write about it here.

That’s it for this week! Check out new “Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations” on Tuesdays-Thursdays. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

I explained before the great shame that I watch “TMZ Live” and this whole “TMZ” parody thing “ZMT” is part of something I’ve been working on for a while, but I kept getting sidetracked. I finally felt like I wanted to introduce the idea. So here we are. “Levi Harvell” is based on the head guy at “TMZ”, Harvey Levin… He’s a real piece of work. A VERY strange guy.

harvey

I said it before, but it bares repeating “TMZ” is terrible all the way around. They may be second only to “Fox News” in spreading fake information. When it’s harmless gossip it’s one thing, but they definitely steer people into what to think.

Sometime I must admit there are moments that are pretty funny. Special when people on the show my Harvey look stupid. Also they read their hate mail and that’s pretty great.

Tomorrow Levi returns with Freedom Female and Admiral Star to talk about “emotional distress” that Barbarious caused Admiral Star. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

One thing that I don’t think gets explored enough is the idea that “Wonder Woman” is a princess on top of being a demi-Goddess. She wasn’t just a normal woman on “Themyscira”. Its seems like even if they wouldn’t admit it the other women on “Themyscira” would hate her. Just food for thought

Speaking of people who potentially has no friends let’s talk about this week’s episode of “The Flash”. Um.. Does “Iris” have no friends? In this week’s episode she has a bachelorette party with:

  • “Caitlyn” – a “work” acquaintance. This is even pointed out in the episode
  • “Felicity” from “Arrow” – someone she should barely even know, but at best an even lesser work acquaintance
  • And the chick her dad knocked up

Seriously?! No friends from the newspaper she worked at? No school buddies? Some she met at the gym? Nothing?! That is weird… Oh also “Flash” trying act drunk was painful. Sorry the guy can play regular “Barry/ The Flash” and that’s it.

We finally have the first appearance of my version of “Thor”, Barbarious in these comics. Even though I could just use the Norse Gods I decided not to. I feel it’s been done too many times. So I made up my own set of Gods called the Cold Gods. Expect to see more of them and learn more about them over time.

Alright, let’s do like “Mon-El” and get into “Supergirl”.

supergirl

I’m not even going to lie I barely paid attention to this week’s episode. There was something about just curing lead poisoning that doesn’t seem to make sense, but maybe it works. One thing in general I’ve noticed is this show seems to have gotten more emotional… It’s really becoming a “girl’s show”. Not in the sense that the main character is a girl, but’s more about emotions than fighting villains. “Buffy” obviously had a female lead, but I feel it rarely if ever became a “girl’s show”. There’s nothing wrong with that, just saying. Anyways “Supergirl” ain’t great either way so whatever

Tomorrow Murdilahorn and Freedom Female return with Badassia to talk about “warrior women”. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

So if you didn’t read my side project for Inktober, Drawtober, and Drawlloween “An October Surprise: A Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations Gaiden” (I’m not upset about it really. *Cries*) here’s a very basic recap:

  • Red Witch went insane and all of humanity
  • Admiral Star lead a team to stop her and ending up resetting everything
  • People only have a hazy idea of what happened

This comic basically is the beginning of the fallout of these events.

Alright, let’s talk some “Flash”. So this week “Cisco” met “Gypsy’s” dad “”Machette” with superpowers”. And we met “The Elongated Man”. Don’t know a lot about “The Elongated Man” from the comics, but this version seem to veer far from the source material. Some of the effect for him were particularly poor too. Also “The Flash” seriously suggest locking him up even though he hadn’t done anything basically because he thought he was dick.  There’s also this whole thing about “Gypsy’s” name being a secret and it ends of being “Cynthia”. Really? All that build up for that?! Weak sauce.

That’s it for this week. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

It’s done. I’ve finished my side project for Inktober, Drawtober, and Drawlloween “An October Surprise: A Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations Gaiden”. My head’s still kinda spnning from it, but I’m truly proud of it. Especially writing-wise I think it’s one of the best things I’ve done. It was the ultimate challenge but I survived and was only late one day.

gohan

With that out of the way, I saw this week’s episode of “Supergirl” and while not great it was probably the best one in quite a while. The whole thing with having a cult that worships her is an interesting idea at least. It would make more sense if they worshipped “Superman” since he’s been around longer and done a lot more, but I’ll give it a break on that…

Tomorrow Red Witch, The Smasher, and Admiral Star discuss a TV show Red Witch is on and mental illness. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

On An Apology

Once again I use the last one of these comics for the week to tie into my side project for Inktober, Drawtober, and Drawlloween called “An October Surprise: A Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations Gaiden”. Speaking of which, by this time next week it’ll be finished. To say the least it has been one hell of a challenge. It has been a challenge of drawing, writing, time management and endurance. Wow it is rewarding though. Those moments where I desperately don’t want to do it are overcome by losing myself in writing or drawing, and though certainly flawed I really like what I’ve made of it so far.

On to other business. I watched “The Flash” last night… I don’t even believe it… They did it AGAIN! Once again “The Flash” created the villains for this season. That pretty much cements that this season of all the “DC Comics” “CW” shows are gonna be just like last seaon’s. “Arrow” and “Legends Of Tomorrow” being good and fighting for the top and “The Flash” and “Supergirl” being crappy and fighting for the bottom. So far “The Flash” is right there at the bottom again. On the plus side, “Wally” is gone. That guy sucks!

That’s it for these comics this week. “An October Surprise: A Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations Gaiden” continues every day for the rest of October. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!

So after some delay I finally got this done. So as stated before, this comic like the last one is based on the work of Robert Crumb. Man, the amount of lines and detail Robert Crumb puts into his work is literally insane! Anyways the panels break down as:

  • Panel 1
    • Thought bubble 1&2  are based on panels from “R. Crumb’s Kafka” a comic book biography of writer Franz Kafka which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4uep & here http://qr.net/b4ufD
    • Thought bubble 3 is based on the cover to the documentary “The Confessions Of Robert Crumb” which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4ugN
    • Thought bubble 4 is based on a this drawing of his character “Mr. Natural” which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4ukD
    • Thought bubble 5 is based on the cover of “The Complete Crumb Vol. 13” which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4uma
    • The rest is based on the backcover to “Carload O’ Comics” which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4uqr
  • Panel 2 is based on a drawing of a woman holding kittens from “R. Crumb’s Art & Beauty” which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4usB
  • Panel 3 is based on the cover to “Mr. Natural” which you can check out here (Note: NSFW) http://qr.net/b4utV
  • Panel 4 is based on a drawing of Hugh Hefner and some women on a trip to Africa from “Art & Beauty Magazine” #2 which you can check out here http://qr.net/b4uwy

Next time…. I honestly don’t know, but it will be the beginning of the end of this “Silver Age” chapter of “The History Of Comics With Q-boy”.  Check out new “Criminal And Crimefighter Conversations” Tuesday-Thursday. Hope you enjoy and see ya then!
